MEDIEVAL FAIR Jerica (from June 29 to July 1)

One of the biggest attractions of Jérica is to assist to the traditional Medieval Fair, where the streets of the old town dress in fabrics, flags, and all kinds of medieval decor, there are various artisans stalls, food and entertainment. In addition to all the people (or almost all) wears his own clothes medieval. It is a spectacle worthy of see.
The best way to go is by car (and the truth is the only one I know) is not far from Valencia, almost all the way it's by highway or similar. If I remember correctly shortly after passing Segorbe, there are signs indicating how to get , it's pretty close to the motorway Mudejar. (I add the google maps link).

how to arrive from Valencia to Jérica

FERIA MEDIEVAL EN JÉRICA (del 29 de Junio al 1 de Julio)

Uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos de Jérica es asistir a su tradicional Feria Medieval, donde las calles del casco antiguo se visten con telas, banderas, y todo tipo de decoración medieval, hay puestos variados de artesanos, comida y espectáculos. Además de que todo el pueblo (o casi) se viste con sus propias ropas medievales. Es un espectáculo digno de ver.

La mejor forma de ir es en coche (y la verdad, es la única que conozco), no es muy lejos casi todo el camino es por autopista o similar. Si no recuerdo mal al poco de pasar Segorbe hay carteles que indican como llegar, esta bastante cerca de la autopista mudéjar. (Añado el link de google maps).

JERICA (interesting villages near Valencia) History

This proven human presence since the Neolithic, thanks to the remains found in the cave of the blacksmiths.
The Iberian period, several settlements have been found one of which coincides with the castle grounds.
The remains of the Roman period are more numerous throughout the region, it can highlight the large number of tombstones found, especially Quintia Prova (the only known throughout of Hispania cited the cost of a Roman arch and two statues.
The first references of the core of Jérica are from the Muslim era, when it is included in the reign of the Taifa of Valencia after disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1027.

In 1565 abandoned the jurisdiction of Aragon becoming part of of Valencian jurisdiction, displaying from that moment his own coat.
After the war of the king Felipe V succession, rewarded the services of the Duke of Berwick winner of the battle in Almansa, creating the Duchy of Liria and of Jérica.
The first duke was Jacob Fitz-James Stuart (son of James II, King of England), Duke of Berwick and Viceroy of Ireland. He was Marshal of France and captain general of Spain during the war of succession.
The third Duke of Liria and of Jérica married the Duchess of Alba, and from that time title passes to the House of Alba.
At present, the possession of the title belongs to Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart (now the person with more titles of nobility in the world, before which the King of Spain, among others, should kneel in his presence, which lives only of their rights and taxes, being the owner of almost half of Spain).

JERICA (pueblos interesantes cerca de Valencia) Historia

Esta constatada la presencia humana desde el neolítico, gracias a los restos encontrados en la cueva de los herreros.
Del periodo ibérico, se han hallado distintos asentami9entos uno de los cuales coincide con el recinto del castillo.

Puede destacar la gran cantidad de lápidas encontradas, sobre todo la Quintia Prova (la única conocida en toda Hispana en la que se cita el costo de un arco Romano y dos estatuas.
Las primeras referencias el núcleo de Jérica son de la época musulmana, cuando se la incluye en el reino de la Taifa de Valencia tras desintegrarse el Califato de Córdoba en 1027.
En 1098, fue conquistada por el Cid Campeador (caballero castellano que conquistó Valencia). De esta época aun perdura el primer cuerpo de la torre de campanas y las zonas más antiguas del castillo.
El 5 de febrero de 1235 fue conquistada por las tropas cristianas al mando del sacristán de Gerona Guillem de Montgriu, aunque no se expulso a la población musulmana.
En el 1249 se le concede la Carta Puebla (documento que otorgaban los reyes cristianos otorgando privilegios a algunos grupos de población para repoblar ciertas zonas) por su gran despoblamiento.
En 1255 el Rey don Jaime I dono la villa de Jérica y sus términos a su hijo don Jaime, que fue el primer barón de la villa de Jérica, así como de Begis, Liria, andilla y Altura.
El 29 de noviembre del 1255 Jaime I otorgó a Calatayud (población de Teruel)
El privilegio para que el Camino Real pasase por Jérica.
Los reales privilegios se sucedieron y en el año 1261 se amplio el termino del castillo y la villa.
En testamento Jaime I concedió el señorío de la villa a su hijo Jaime II en 1272.
La muralla ya existente se fortifico posteriormente.
En el 1363 en el recrudecimiento de la guerra entre Aragón y Castilla, el ejercito Castellano entro en la villa haciéndose fuerte en el castillo y la iglesia.
En 1368 murió el ultimo señor de Jérica (sin herederos) por lo que la villa fue devuelta a Pedro IV el Ceremonioso, como bien real. Desde entonces cambio varias veces de señor.
En 1565 abandono el fuero de Aragón pasando a formar parte del de Valencia, ostentando desde ese momento su propio escudo.
Tras la guerra de sucesión el rey Felipe V, premió los servicios del duque de Berwick vencedor de la batalla de Almansa, creo el ducado de Liria y Jérica.
El primer duque fue Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart (hijo de Jacobo II rey de Inglaterra), duque de Berwick y virrey de Irlanda. Fue mariscal de Francia y capitán general de España durante la guerra de sucesión.
El tercer duque de Liria y Jérica se caso con la duquesa de Alba, y a partir de ese momento el titulo pasa a manos de la casa de Alba.
En la actualidad la posesión del titulo, pertenece a Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart (actualmente la persona con mas títulos nobiliarios del mundo, ante la cual el rey de España entre otros, deben arrodillarse en su presencia, la cual vive solo de sus derechos y tributos, siendo dueña de casi media España).
Durante las guerras Carlistas, los Carlistas se hicieron fuertes en el interior del castillo, que posteriormente fue demolido por las tropas Liberales.
Durante la guerra civil Española la localidad sufrió tal devastación, que fue incluida en la lista de regiones devastadas, haciéndose cargo el estado de la reconstrucción de numerosos monumentos.

JERICA (interesting villages near Valencia) Curiosities

Jérica (Xèrica in Valencian language) is a remote municipality in Castellón in the Valencian Community. Located in the natural path that connects Aragon and Valencia.
It has a population of 1590 inhabitants (INE 2006).
Jerica is near the limit of the natural park of Sierra de Espadan.
At a distance of about 70 kilometers northwest of Valencia.
Currently are conserved medieval streets shaped, with old houses.
The Bell Tower built in Mudejar stile were built in 1634.
The castle was destroyed in the Carlist Wars, but still you can see the Roman foundations, although most of the construction are from the Muslim. period The best preserved area is the Tower of Mayot. "The Turret" of a sturdy looking, square plan with walls over 1.5 meters thick, highlight the semicircular vaults of the ground floor.

how to arrive from Valencia to Jerica

JÉRICA (pueblos interesantes cerca de Valencia) Curiosidades

Jérica (Xèrica en valenciano) es un municipio del interior de Castellón en la Comunidad Valenciana. Situada en el camino natural que une Aragón y Valencia.
Tiene una población de 1590 habitantes (según el INE de 2006).
Jérica esta Cerca del limite del parque natural de la Sierra de Espadan.
A una distancia de unos 70 kilómetros al noroeste de valencia.
Actualmente Se conservan sus calles con forma medieval, casas antiguas.
La Torre de las Campanas de origen mudéjar construida en 1634.
El castillo fue destruido en las guerras Carlistas, pero aun se pueden observar los basamentos romanos, aunque la mayor parte de la construcción es del periodo musulmán. La zona mejor conservada es la Torre de Mayot. “La Torreta” de aspecto robusto y planta cuadrada con muros de mas de 1.5 metros de espesor, destacan las bóvedas de medio punto de su planta baja.
Las Torres de los Ordaces y La Muela, torres musulmanas que formaban parte del sistema de vigía del castillo, actualmente se encuentran en muy mal estado de conservación.
 Jérica es un pueblo pequeño pero con mucho encanto, al que si se dispone de coche (de otra forma es bastante difícil) merece la pena escaparse, haciendo ruta por otros pueblos o ciudades que hay de camino de los que ya hablaré

WHY IS RAINING ASH IN VALENCIA?

Yes it's true, today it's raining ash on Valencia and without being myself a meteorologist or anything like that, I can say that the vast cloud covering Valencia and the ashes rain may be for two possible reasons:

1 The hell has opened its doors and comes to pick up their corrupt friends (starting in Valencia which is where most work has the evil).

2 That unfortunately is more plausible. The great fire that started Thursday June 28, 2012 in Cortes de Pallás about 77 kilometers southwest of Valencia, uncontrolled advances by one of the few green areas left in the Valencia.
The fire has reached the towns of Dos Aguas, Yátova, Macastre and Real de Montroy is gaining ground to the fire extinguishing agents there are already over 1000 people (working together in extinguishing there are brigades de Catalunya, Aragon, Castilla la Mancha, Murcia, Madrid and Baleares), 28 air squads, 9 brigades helicopter transport, 52 fire engines, the consortium staff, volunteers and 2 sections of the Emergency Military Unit (UME). And for the moment it forced to displace over 700 neighbors.
The strong wind that is obstructing the extinction of the fire, is also responsible for the great cloud of smoke and ash moving through Valencia.

I hope this is not another fire caused by some wretched person (not to use another name that deserves), motivated by private interests, or a brigade member affected by the crisis looking for a summer job at the expense of health and the environment of all, as has happened many times before in Valencia.
And for the benefit of all I hope that get as well soon stop the fire.

¿POR QUÉ ESTA LLOVIENDO CENIZA EN VALENCIA?

Así es, hoy esta lloviendo ceniza en valencia y sin ser yo meteorólogo ni nada de eso, os puedo decir que la gran nube que cubre valencia y la ceniza que cae es por dos posibles razones:

1 El infierno ha abierto sus puertas y viene a recoger a sus amigos corruptos (comenzando por valencia que es donde más trabajo tiene).

2 Que por desgracia es más plausible. El gran incendio que comenzo ayer jueves 28 de Junio de 2012 en Cortes de Pallás a unos 77 kilómetros al suroeste de valencia, avanza descontrolado por una de las pocas zonas verdes que quedaban en la comunidad Valenciana.

El incendio que ya ha alcanzado Los términos municipales de Dos Aguas, Yátova, Macastre y Real de Montroy sigue ganando terreno a los medios de extinción de incendio que ya son mas de 1000 personas (colaboran en la extinción brigadas de Cataluña, Aragón, Castilla la Mancha, Murcia, Madrid y Baleares),  28 medios aéreos, 9 brigadas helitransportadas, 52 autobombas, personal del consorcio, voluntarios y 2 secciones de la Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME). Y que de momento ha obligado a desplazar a mas de 700 vecinos.

El fuerte viento que esta impidiendo la extinción del incendio, es también el responsable de la gran nube de humo y ceniza que se mueve por Valencia.

Esperemos que esto no sea otro incendio provocado por algún desgraciado (por no usar el otro nombre que merece), motivado por intereses privados, o algún brigadista afectado por la crisis buscando un puesto de trabajo en verano a costa de la salud y el medio ambiente de todos, como ya ha pasado en muchas otras ocasiones en Valencia.

Y por el bien de todos también espero que se consiga parar pronto.

INTERESTING PLACES TO EAT PAELLA 3:

La Pepica :

It is also an interesting option to go to the beginning of the Paseo de Neptuno in Playa de las Arenas. Where there is a restaurants in for over 100 years, called The Pepica  and specializing in rice dishes and seafood. (usually fresh fish of the day) restaurants next door are not bad but these are one of the most highly recommended. Those which I don't recommend (by several bad experiences, are those that are beyond the middle of the paseo maritimo).
It's situated right on the beach, have a sunroom, the kitchen is open and you can see what they are  preparing and how is cooked. The decoration is typical Valencian tiles and various objects from the garden of Valencia. In general the waiters are friendly and usually speak English, but in days of hard work, of course not always friendly. This is a more expensive option, the meal costs from 25 euros per person (usually well paid, but if you have not booked and there are many people, you risk having lower quality), and although you can eat well, it is advisable book on food 11 am to reserve a meal, as in summer are always full, thanks to the good area and their fame. In the area, it is interesting to take a walk around Port America's Cup, for the viewpoint of the breakwatter that leads to the lighthouse.  From there you can see on a clear day the Gulf of Valencia's form, and then walk along the dock (to see the "precious" and "cheap" abandoned buildings), through which also passes the Valencia's Street Circuit Formula 1. and if you want to have a counterpoint, you can stroll through the streets of the old fishing district of El Cabañal and it's municipal market. To see how the city of Valencia's has allowed the low houses of fishermen spoil with it's bad policy of building large projects only empty and very modernist, without caring for the historical heritage.

You can also call me to make any route for this and other areas and we try to convince my mother, who is the best cook paella in the world to prepare us a paella.

SITIOS INTERESANTES DONDE COMER PAELLA 3:

La Pepica

También es una opción interesante ir al principio del Paseo de Neptuno, en  la Playa de las Arenas. Donde hay un restaurante de más de 100 años, llamado La Pepica, su especialidade son los arroces, pescados y mariscos.  (el pescado suele ser fresco del día) los restaurantes de al lado tampoco están mala aunque este es de los más recomendables Los que no recomiendo (por varias malas experiencias, son los que están mas allá de la mitad del paseo marítimo)
. Está en primera línea de playa, con una terraza acristalada, la cocina esta abierta y se puede ver lo que están preparando y como lo hacen. La decoración es típica valenciana con azulejos y objetos varios de la huerta Valenciana. En general los camareros son agradables y suelen hablar ingles, aunque en días de mucho trabajo, lógicamente no siempre son simpáticos. Esta es la opción más cara hasta ahora, la comida sale a partir de 25 euros por persona (normalmente bien pagados, pero si no has reservado y hay muchísima gente, te arriesgas a que la calidad baje), y aunque se come muy bien, es aconsejable pasarse sobre las 11 de la mañana para reservar la comida, ya que en verano siempre están llenos, gracias a la zona y a su fama. Por la zona, es interesante dar un paseo por el Port America’s Cup, por el mirador del espigón que lleva al faro. Desde allí se puede ver en un día despejado la forma del golfo de Valencia y luego pasear por la dársena (para ver los “preciosos” y “baratos” edificios abandonados), por donde también pasa el Valencia Street Circuit de formula 1. y si queréis un contrapunto, podéis pasear por las calles del antiguo barrio de pescadores del Cabañal y su mercado municipal. Para ver como el ayuntamiento de Valencia ha dejado que las casas bajas de pescadores se echen a perder con su mala política de solo grandes obras vacías y ultramodernistas, sin cuidar el patrimonio histórico.

También podéis llamarme para hacer alguna ruta por esta u otras zonas, e intentamos liar a mi madre, que es la mejor cocinera de paellas del mundo a ver si nos prepara la comida.

INTERESTING PLACES TO EAT PAELLA 2:

 Free Buffet NECO
 Usually the tourists visiting Valencia, want to eat paella, typical Valencian dish. It's a fully understandable thing, but like not all Italians know how to make fresh pasta and pizza, not all Asians knows karate. Not all  knows Valencians paella. for this reason is a mistake to go to the first bar or restaurant that you find to eat paellabecause usually is not too good, or is pre-cooked and are often be expensive.
 First of all, I do not recommend too much eating paella in the area around the town hall, because it is very touristy area, which is very expensive price, and quality is no big deal (plus many have individual pre-cooked paella, which I hate).
Normally in Spain, paella is not eaten at night, because it is more indigestible. Only done in festivals (where you will go to bed late).
A cheap and surprisingly so good, is the Neco buffet, where you can weekday lunch or dinner for 9.95 euro (plus drink), and on weekends for 13 euro (plus drink). It is a buffet of Mediterranean food (although I don't usually trust in these sites), where  tapas, paella and others have a good quality. Also you only worry of serving the food, because the waiters removed the dirty dishes and they bring you the drinks. It is recommendable to go during the week because on weekends there is usually a long queue There is also the option of taking away food to go from 3 euros.
I know the one in El Saler Mall, opposite the museum of science (on the south side). It is an ideal place to finish a walking route whithin theTuria's the river bed . Or you can ask for food to takeaway (if you're not going to take advantage of the buffet, or you want to spend less, you may eat in the park within the river)
 I've seen they have two more:
Calle Pascual y Genis 9 in Valencia (two blocks behind the post office in the Town Hall Square). Taking the food to takeaway here, depending on what you like walking, the most peaceful sites are:
 A little over a kilometer is the church of St. Augustine, which has a mini park behind with a drinking fountain. 300 meters ahead is the  Hospital's Library Park, where you have more space (although currently is fenced by half  for be under construction) in the area also has drinking fountain
 Other choice a little shorter, it can be to follow the Calle Pintor Sorolla to the Parterre's park or to the Glorieta 's park. Although the traffic surrounds them are pretty calm.
 And there's another on the street Rambla del Saler 16, (which Google Maps tells me it is in the Saler´s natural park, but I can't  locate where is exactly).

You can also call me to make a route for this and other areas and try to convince my mother (who is the greatest cook paella in the world) to cook a paella

SITIOS INTERESANTES DONDE COMER PAELLA 2:

Buffet Libre NECO

Generalmente los turistas que visitan Valencia quieren comer paella, el plato más típico Valenciano. Cosa totalmente comprensible, pero al igual que no todos los Italianos saben hacer pasta fresca y pizza, ni todos los asiáticos saben karate. No todos los Valencianos saben hacer paella. Por eso es un error ir al primer bar o restaurante que encuentras a comer paella, ya que normalmente no es demasiado buena, o es precocinada y además suele ser cara.
Primero de todo, no recomiendo demasiado comer paella en la zona que rodea el ayuntamiento, ya que es zona muy turística, que tiene precios muy caros y la calidad no es gran cosa (además muchos tienen paellas individuales precocinadas, las cuales odio).

Normalmente en España la paella no se come por la noche, porque resulta más indigesta. Solo se hace en fiestas populares (cuando tardaras en ir a dormir)
.
Una opción barata y sorprendentemente muy buena, es el buffet libre Neco donde entre semana puedes comer o cenar por 9.95 euros (más bebida), y en fin de semana por 13 euros (más bebida). Es un buffet libre de comida mediterránea, donde (aunque no suelo confiar en este tipo de sitios) las tapas, la paella y otros tienen buena calidad. Además tu solo te preocupas de servirte la comida, ya que los camareros retiran los platos sucios y te traen la bebida. Es recomendable ir entre semana, ya que en fin de semana suele haber una larga cola. También existe la opción de coger comida para llevar desde 3 euros.
 Yo conozco el que esta en el centro comercial el Saler, frente al museo de las ciencias (en el lado sur). Es un sitio ideal para acabar una ruta paseando por el cauce del río Túria. O pedir la comida para llevar (si no vais a aprovechar el buffet libre, o queréis gastar menos, podéis comer en el parque dentro del río)
He visto que tienen dos más: Calle Pascual y Genís 9 en Valencia (dos calles detrás del edificio de correos, en la Plaza del Ayuntamiento). Cogiendo la comida para llevar en este, dependiendo de lo que queráis andar, los sitios más tranquilos son:
A poco mas de un kilómetro, esta la iglesia de San Agustín, que contiene detrás un mini parque con una fuente de agua potable. 300 metros más adelante esta el parque de la Biblioteca del Hospital, donde tendréis mas espacio (aunque actualmente la mitad esta vallado por obras) en la zona también hay una fuente.
Otra opción un poco más corta, seria seguir la Calle Pintor Sorolla hasta el parque del Parterre o de la Glorieta. Aunque los rodea el trafico son bastante tranquilos.
O directamente podéis seguir vuestra imaginación.
Y otro en la calle Rambla del Saler 16, (que google maps me dice que esta en por el Saler, pero no ubico donde exactamente).
También podéis llamarme para hacer alguna ruta por esta u otras zonas, e intentamos liar a mi madre, que es la mejor cocinera de paellas del mundo a ver si nos prepara la comida.
