9 D’OCTUBRE DIA DE SAN DONIS LA MOCADORÀ (October 9th day of St. Denis, patron saint of lovers)

On October 9 the Valencians celebrated our own Valentine. Because in the Valencia region St. Denis is the patron saint of lovers.
The tradition on this day, is that the guy, give the girl a tissue (mocador in Valenciano) which are wrapped marzipan shaped fireworks, fruit and vegetables from the garden of Valencia.

This tradition dates back to the eighteenth century, when Felipe V abolished the Valencian charters and the festival of October 9. The bakers started making marzipan shaped rocket (recalling the fireworks prohibited on that day) and garden products of Valencia (celebrating their fertility).

The Tronador Piula and (2 types of rockets, which are represented in marzipan) for its phallic shape reminiscent of the penis (chargingit  with sexual symbolism) and fruits and vegetables, according to popular belief, vegetables represent the Moors gave to Doña Violante of Hungary (wife of Jaume I) when he conquered Valencia.

The sweets wrapped in the tissue given away to the beloved woman, and she kept all tissues (since they  started as a couple) as proof of love. So many Valencians consider that day as our Valentine.

Take this opportunity to claim that it is a sexist tradition, because men also deserves a gift.
