OCTOBER'S 12 HISPANITY DAY (Day of Race)

On 12 October, is celebrated in Spain and in many parts of Latin America the Hispanity Day, commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America that day in 1492. that was the beginning of the "meeting of two worlds", which led to an exchange of cultures, food, resources, etc.. between Europe and America and continued with the European colonization of America. (Despite what this sounds nice, it should be noted that the Europeans we get much more out that Americans, by the plundering of treasures and the general abuse to Native Americans in the task of "Civilize" them.

Colon was not aware that he had come to the Americas (and he thought he was in India, from there that mistakenly call their native Indians), and the name of America not give until four expeditions later (financed by the Spanish crown), when the cartographer Martin Walldseemüller (first European to recognize and understand that this was a new continent) gave that name to his map in 1504.
Despite that mistake, is still considered the October 12, the day of the discovery of the Americas.


The Hispanity name comes from the Spanish classical and in the early twentieth century, was in disuse.
In 1913 Faustino Rodríguez-San Pedro from the Ibero-American Organization proposed to be held on October 12 the Day of the Race.
La Fiesta de la Raza, reached the rank of National Day in Spain en1918.
This was true, until in 1926 the Spanish priest Zechariah of Vizcarra, proposed in an article published in Buenos Aires (Argentina), the word Hispanity, should replace the word race.
Finally, the year 1935 was held in Madrid the Hispanity Day.


Some countries celebrate Columbus Day, the Day of Indigenous People (or Native American Day) usually on the second Monday of October.

In Spain, coincides with Armed Forces Day (so it is celebrated with a military parade) and the Day of the Virgin of Pilar (patroness of Zaragoza)
